The Rotary Minibus Project

13/1/2016

Guest Speaker: Dick Nathan, Past District Governor

RCK joined together with 42 other London Rotary Clubs, and Rotary Clubs in Florida and the Ukraine to raise funds for a minibus for the Revival Medical Centre in Cherniyev, Ukraine.

This area was blighted by fall-out from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and children are still being born today with deformities due to the disaster.  The Medical Centre provides much needed care to those affected, and the centre needed a new minibus to ferry the children between their homes and the centre.
That is where Rotary stepped in, and, through international collaboration, bought the new minibus.

Rotarians from London, headed by Immediate Past District Governor Dick Nathan, drove the minibus, and other aid, all the way from London to Cherniyev – a journey of 4 days.

Rotarians from across District 1130 came together at Marylebone Church for an evening of carols, Christmas readings by Rotarians (including District Governor Toni Finckel and Rotary of Great Britain & Ireland Vice President Elect Eve Conway), and goodwill, including present donation to the children's ward at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. The service was followed by lively conversation and mulled wine and mince pies at the Rotary London headquarters.

Guest Speaker: Dr Susannah Maidment, Junior Research Fellow at Imperial College

Dr Maidment gave a fascinating presentation about her ground-breaking work in identifying what appears to be proteins of dinosaurs: red blood cells and white blood cells.  We look forward to hearing how her research develops.  She also made some amusing observations on the accuracy (or lack of !) of the recent Jurassic World film.

St. Stephens' Musical Traditions

Guest speaker: Father Reg Bushau of St. Stephens, Gloucester Road

Our weekly meetings, at the Vanderbilt Hotel, take place in the parish of St Stephens.  Father Reg came to talk to us about his work in the parish, and in particular St Stephen’s strong musical tradition, hosting weekly concerts.  Father Reg also spoke to us about the church’s connection to TS Eliot, who served there as an altar boy for decades, and his wife Valerie.  He pointed out that Hollywood’s film “Tom & Viv” was more fiction than fact! It is thanks to a bequest from her that the church can hold such wonderful concerts.
